Thanks Brett, I know you keep a very busy schedule and I appreciate that you are always here, every week, faithful and willing to share the good news.

Over the last several weeks there is a song that keeps re-surfacing from my heart:

"It is Well With My Soul"

http://youtube.com/watch?v=wPFVijGcLtI

Our loving Father wants us to be joyful and the champions he has created us to be. He will open doors for us we don't even know are there ahead of time, a "hook-up" from heaven. The Divine Connection is there for the asking.

"It is in the quiet crucible of your personal, private sufferings that your noblest dreams are born, and God's greatest gifts are given in compensation for what you have been through. It is well..." Wintley Phipps

Happy day and wonderful week to you!!

Why does this article start off talking about Jesus as the "only foundation" for Christians and then not quote Jesus at all? Paul is quoted, as well as the Psalms and Isaiah, but nothing from Christ himself.

I find that very interesting.

Doesn't it seem logical that if you're going to call yourself a Christian you'd want to go by what Christ says, not what other people say? And why call he Bible the "word of God" when it's clearly the word of Paul, Isaiah and other men? It says it right on the page that it's written by those guys, so why call it something else?

If your are pretending to be ignorant of the claims of the Church and the teaching of the Apostles and the prophets there is no answering you but if not then I suggest you truly listen to that teaching.

The Prophets spoke as ones hearing from God. Thus the Bible is the Word of God. But the Old Testament prophets and the New Testament Apostles and Jesus said that what we call the Bible is the Word of God. They explain how they received the word they related. The Apostles were appointed by Jesus to speak to men and lead the Church as they were trained by Him. They each claimed to hear directly from the Resurrected Lord and thus speak for Him. The Apostles said their teaching was inspired by the Holy Spirit and came directly from the mouth of God thus the Word of God.

Jesus in the following passages said He is the Chief Cornerstone: Matt. 21:42; Mark 12:10; Luke 20:17 citing Old Testament prophecies. Acts 4:11 the apostles quoted Jesus in their teaching making this same claim.

Good answer, Red! Peter said, "Holy men of God spake as they were moved (borne along) by the Holy Ghost." That is why the Bible is the Word of God. He is the ultimate author. -Rev. S

Thanks Brett to be here every Sunday!

"Some turn to earthly riches. Others hope in human wisdom. Others put their confidence in personal power and influence..." I think that a simple individual can know these three different ways, in the course of his life (with more and less intensity), and depending on whether he has been disappointed, he knows how to find a right balance...because whatever happens and will happen: Lord remains and will remain the rock of refuge in the storm!

avatar

I think you've summarized that well, Francisca. Life is definitely a process of finding the right balance of earthly things, while always keeping Christ as the cornerstone of everything. A life built upon that foundation will be a successful one. And, of course, we must remember that Jesus told us to be in the world, but not of the world. I'm not sure which verse that is in, but if anyone knows feel free to tell.

WOW! The search engine on the website is awesome!

I intend to do many searches to find out why Christian Conservatives are generally so opposed to any goverment help to middle classes, poor classes, single parents, families with two workin parents.

Of course, Im also gointa try to uncover the mystery of why they are generally so supportive of pre-emptive war.

Im gointo do lotsa searches on their website to find out why we should be so supportive of polluters, jailers, and legislation designed to help corporations and inshurance companies defraud middle class folk.

Ive been wonderin bout these questions for a long tiem and have yet to find an answer.

Jesus was the essence of LOVE. That was HIS message. At least, thats how I read the Bible. Love, Forgiveness, Acceptance, ... and an unceasing desire to ALWAYS love, support, and give succor to those who simply want to live a blessed life.

Im tired of us only supportin right wing politicians who preach fear and intolerance.

Could you post the link to the website Goppy? I have the same questions. I must confess that I didn't watch the entire video.

Beeboppin, here's the link to the site's homepage: http://blueletterbible.org/index.html

I haven't actually fully explored the site, though there seem to be some interesting commentaries. I've discovered Martin Luther's 95 theses on there, which I've never read in their entirety. After just giving them a cursory glance, I can see that a lot of Martin Luther's focus was simply on the amount of power the Pope had obtained in that period of time. I sometimes like to imagine what might have happened if the Catholic Church had been willing to discuss reformation over the issue of indulgences and such. Perhaps the Christian Church as a whole would be in greater harmony today. Who knows? Luther definitely didn't want to bring about a split.

avatar

The power created by the pope has a lot to do with the reasons why Catholics prevent priests from marrying or being (gasp) women. Transfer of wealth or the lack thereof shaped more decisions made by earlier popes than the teachings of Christ.

Sometimes, I liken the problems that Martin Luther railed against 'back in the day' are similar to the issues faced by Christian Conservatives today.

Back then, the Catholic Church was a quasi-state, with political control over poeples lives.

So, I find it ironikal that we Christian Conservatives work so hard to align ourselfs with a particular political movement ... especially one liek the Republican Revolution ... which advocated for so much intolerance and embraced such a hypocritical, self righteous double standard.

I do really liek the website.

Thanks again for posting it.

Goppy.

Jesus wasn't a politician.

He had nothing to do with government.

He helped the people in front of him.

The government IS NOT the United Way. It was never meant to be. The founders wanted government off our backs so we could live as closely as "The Creator" as we could.

I agree Locky!

1. Jesus was not a politician.

2. You are also right that he helped the poeple in front of him.

So...

1. How did we Christian Conservatives become so wrapped up with right wing politics? The politics whose philosophy is to empower the wealthy and erect road blocks to the middle class?

2. Why do we support legislators whose aim is so OPPOSITE of Jesus' everyday life? Jesus helped poeple in front of him. Right Wing Politicians dont believe in that. Quite the opposite.

Right Wing politicians believe in a sort of Evolutionary 'Survival of the Fittest'. They support every kind of chicanery known to man if its got a label of Capitalist Enterprise. (sub-prime loaners)

But if goverment tries to help a single mother with a loaf of bread... well, we Christian Conservatives become outraged at the misappropriation of our tax dollors.

I just wish I could come to some kind of rational explanation .. for my own understanding.

I mean, it just dont make no sense.

If I wanted fear and intolerance, I'd be a lib and I'd support liberal politicians that see babies as "punishment".

Hence he 35 million dead babies rotting in landfills across the country all in the name of women's rights.

For six long years the Republicans had control over the House and the Senate. For the later part of those six, they gained control over the Supreme Court. Why hasn't Roe V. Wade been overturned? Could it be because those in charge really don't care about the 35 million dead babies rotting away in a landfills across the country?

Repubs were not up to fighting to put conservatives on the court just to have them "Borked" by men of such high caliber as Ted Kennedy.

That's how losers like Souter & Kennedy got on the court.

Well Beeby, I wasnt gointa address Locky on the issue.

hes pretty entrenched in the issue.

But I appreciate your comment. Its a very rational observation.

It almost seems as though the Republicans have been USIN the abortion issue to raise campaign funds and motivate their constituency.

I WELCOME the Republicans to ban Abortion!

I WELCOME them to do so!

HAVE AT IT!!

It will only highlight their abandonment of Christian Values as they continue to deny health care to all those children born to poverty ... as they continue to campaign against school levies ... as they continue to support Republicans who fight against minimum wages so parents can give their children proper nutrition.

The unfortunate truth is ... Christian Conservatives (in the form invented by Jerry Falwell) only care about Life BEFORE birth, and right bEfore you die. That is, they fight against euthanazia.

In between, its 'Tough Luck'.

In between, its 'Tough Luck'.

That's right, Goppy. It's "Tough Luck"

as in-- "Tough Luck" that a man with not a blemish of sin or wrongdoing of anykind had to die such a miserable, agonizing death on a cross.

And while doing so saved mankind.

That's why you cannot find answers to just about anything you're looking for.

Another attempt to hijack a thread that has nothing to do with politics and bring it into that direction, some people on this site are ridiculous.

FTA this is not a political board, this story was posted under the religious section. If you can't post in a non political topic without commenting on politics PLEASE refrain from doing so. It often changes the topic, in this case from a light hearted story into a thread full of name calling and agenda pushing.

All I'm saying is try to stay on topic please :)

(and no, just because the president is Christian that does not make it fall under this topic)

Interesting that you mention research into such a thing. I am actually getting ready to set up research for a senior sociology project on that exact topic. I am curious why it seems that the most conservative, fundamental religions (including some Christians) seem the least willing to consider cooperation and goals of peace. It seems strange given that peace is a tenant of most religions at some level, especially teachings of Jesus.

avatar
Reply

I think the answer lies in the move Dogma, a comedy strange enough.

Chris Rock has a line where he says the biggest problem with religions is that they took a good idea and built a belief system on it. Its easy to change an idea, but changing a belief is tricky, people kill for it, people die for it, people fight over it.

When people believe so strongly in something (as fundamentalists do) it becomes impossible to cope with changes and advancement as time moves on. In order to keep their belief structure intact, they have to ignore facts and shy away from truths, when instead they could fit their beliefs in with the truths.

Thanx, Brett, for another great devotional!

Jesus Christ is the chief cornerstone of the true Church, for which He shed His blood to establish.

Yet even though he died for our sins on the Cross, he arose victorious over sin, death & the grave. Therefore we can have victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. He is the Rock of our salvation, Who is the only way to Heaven, our great foundation for life eternal & the abundant life while in this present world. -Rev. S
