  Talk about Mohammed as you do Jesus (use lower case for Mohamed). Do your "I don't believe in the flying spaghetti monster" thing. Tell them that we weren't made by a god (lower case), but that they evolved from primates (that will go down well). Also, let them know in no uncertain terms that the Koran is full of mistakes (give some examples), and that their mosques are full of hypocrites.

    I got nothing against religon, i just dont believe in it. That doesn't meen i have to hate equally.

    People not believing in your god doesn't give you the right to attack them - for the record pointing out ignorance is not attacking.

    and stop pretending to know anything about Muslims, most of whom i know are very peaceful and understanding people, and i only point out the ignorance of Christianity when they try to convert me which no-other religion even tries on the scale of Christianity.

      I agree. I know a bunch of Muslims, some of them are good friends. They know I'm an atheist, but not a single one of them has ever tried to convert or kill me. We don't talk much about religion because I have little to say, and they prefer to practice it rather than talk about it. They believe in God, I don't, and that's that.

      I have sometimes entered into a discussion with Daylight about religion on Propeller, but even he is rather polite when he writes about Islam. He has never threatened to track me down and kill me.

        'Moslem' is a different spelling/pronunciation that some Muslims find offensive. 'Moslem' is seen as derived from the word 'Zulm', which means oppressive, cruel, unjust, etc.

          Im not religious either and I think it's funny when I hear an athiest that is just as rabid about not believing in god as a christian is in believing in god. Why would an Atheist go out of their way to try and stop someone believing in god? What's the point?

          Athiesm is a religion. they have no scientific evidence to the contrary of believing in god besides the big bang which is a very hypocritical event for them. Scientifically we cant create something out of nothing (1st law of thermodynamics). But here we are. So how do the atheist prove there is no god when they cant prove how we got here?

            Religion is a construct which intentionally sucks people in and then sacrifices the individual to perpetuate itself.

            Atheism is just a place you end up at if you don't go along with all the conflicting religion beliefs.

            Um, the big bang is hardly 'something out of nothing'. A singularity is not 'nothing'. Brane theory does not posit 'nothing' either.

            Besides, the big bang is not evidence against God's existence anyway. A supreme being certainly could have used such a mechanism.

            It is not up to science to disprove God. It is up to those making the positive statement (e.g. "Only my particular God exists") to provide evidence.

            If you're really interested in your question: "Why would an Atheist go out of their way to try and stop someone believing in god? What's the point?", I suggest you read "The God Delusion". No, you don't have to buy it, you can just check it out of the library. Dawkins basic argument is that religious fundamentalism (Christian, Muslim, et al.) is demonstrably dangerous and that even moderate religion encourages an unquestioned faith, which is fertile ground for such fundamentalism.

              I'm Christian, raised in the south of the U.S.A. (buckle of the bible belt.) And I was told repetitively to know the reason for what I believe. My pastors taught me to read things I don't agree with and to think. I am sure that there are elements of Christianity (and all social groupings) that tell people to have unquestioning faith.

              Tangent, you have been wonderful to talk with and discuss issues with, but you are not that common. I can't tell you how many times that I ran into people who said. "Dawkins said I shouldn't even debate Christians" If that is true, then Dawkins is very dangerous (demonstrably). While it seems that many atheist are open minded, there seems to be a whole new generation of unquestioningly loyal evolutionist who hate those who disagree with them. Please look into this. I don't wish to exaggerate the problem, but it is very concerning.

              I resent the implication that atheists are flightless birds! We have wings on our "little bird brains."

              Both Mercury in Greek mythology, and The Sub-Mariner in Marvel comics, have shown us that only tiny wings at the ankle are needed to take flight. Extrapolating this to the "wings on our little bird brains" model has shown more than sufficient anecdotal evidence that air borne status can be achieved. I think we can all agree that that's an epistemology that's not just flapping its wings.

              Well, the quark model is based on observed behaviours of quantum particles detected in particle colliders. Early on, the quantum mathematics involved predicted the liklihood of 'flavors' of quarks that were not present in the initial standard model. These flavors were eventually detected. I doubt there will ever be 'proof', since they are far too small to be directly observed. After all, it could be little speedy gnomes making these trails in bubble chambers.

              I imagine we'll get a lot more insight (and 'independent confirmation') when the Large Hadron Collider goes into service later this year. Let me know when the Hairy Thunderer Detector/Cosmic Muffin Accelerator starts up, will you?

                So then by extension (if we look back 100 years at where the possibilities of "quarks" were and extrapolate) would you be willing to say that there's a possibility that God exists as many observe behaviours which they attribute to a divine being yet the only thing we lack is a way to "detect" or "measure" God? After all, you have to "doubt" that there will ever be 'proof' since God (at least recently and among those who don't believe) hasn't been directly observed yet?

                I'm not saying you have to believe or declare there is or isn't a God. I'm just curious if you're willing to admit to the possibility based on the same evidence that exists for quarks (though the model isn't a scientific one neccessarily, granted).

                  Or perhaps "God" exists in the influencing of electrons on a sub-atomic level. Where do they go when they "tunnel"? If you take into consideration chaos theory, then what if a "God" were influencing the probability cloud of electrons every time they tunneled? Wouldn't that extrapolate (from chaos theory) into a vast influence over every single thing on the planet?

                    I think most atheists accept that the existence of god(s) is possible; they just don't think that it's probable. You can never exclude the existence of anything with absolute certainty. Do we know, for example what does or does not exist at the other end of the universe?

                    You say "many observe behaviours which they attribute to a divine being." Yes they do. My problem is that as I look around in the world, I see a lot of things that indicate that either (1) God does not exist, or (2) He doesn't care, or (3) He is evil. Of these possibilities, I find (1) the most acceptable.

                      Everything I've observed suggests a deity doesn't exist, and belief in one (or more) is based on a construct created to explain the mysterious in earlier times. Another article I can't locate at the moment suggests that believing in the supernatural and owning pets both have a therapeutic effect of some sort. I suspect both result in an endorphin rush.

                    Yes, God could be influencing everything we see, from galactic collisions to sub-atomic motion. From what science has learned so far, God doesn't seem to be 'necessary' in any of these phenomena. We don't *know* everything about quantum physics, but we've got some decent tools to check out some good guesses.

                    Let me be clear regarding my epistemology: Science will never be absolutely certain of anything. Science is about fact not absolute truth. As I said in another response, everything around us may have every appearance of naturalistic causation, yet there is still the possibility of some metaphysical being or force pulling all the strings. Science would have no way to tell, nor would such knowledge be of any value as long as stuff kept behaving pretty much as it does now.

    I've always been willing to tell ALL religious people they are nuts, that they are praying to an empty sky. That said, the precepts of Western religion are superior to those of most others. Western religious values and morals are what has enabled the west to outstrip the rest of the world. But I treat them as words of learned men, not words from God.

I'm gonna say , most atheists I've ever met were raised with religion , but made a concious decision not to choose a religion of thier own . Of course , unless , Atheism is a religion of it's own . A religion of non-religious beliefs .

              I wasn't raised religious. I don't believe in god. My parents were raised religious and believe in god. They let their Children choose if we wanted to go to Church. Instead of forcing us to go like many parents. They asked both me and my sister if we wanted to go to church. I went a couple of times, and found what they were trying to feed me was too unbelievable to be true. The more and more you look at the evidence that we have and the way it says things are in the bible and it can be dismissed as a work of fiction. As such it's very easy to dismiss the idea of a God entirely.

              Anyone else notice that the christian author shows his prejudice when painting all muslims as wanting to kill someone for thinking different? I guess to him all Muslims are fundies. We all know that isn't the case, just as all Christians are fundies. The author has no credibility.

              Yes, most atheists are raised in some kind of religion, but it's not necessarily personal pain that turns them away from religion. It's more like a slow and gradual awakening. As one looks around in the world, one gradually realizes that what one has learned about God just makes no sense. Religious people often make the mistake of believing that one has to accept the big bang theory or evolution in order to be an atheist. That is not the case. Belief in God doesn't make sense even if one has nothing to replace it with. I can comfortably say that I simply don't know the origin of the Universe.

    When we criticize other fundamentalist religions than Christianity, we are called hypocrites, because many of the people from our OWN culture are fundamentalists. Most Muslims are peace loving, in my experience.

      I don't even understand this Comfort guy's argument. When atheists deny God, they deny all gods, whatever they are called, and they reject all holy texts, including the Koran. When we post on Propeller, we post for the whole world to see. I don't go to specific Christian sites just to annoy them, so why would I go to Muslim sites to do that?

      Is his point that some societies do not have religious freedom? We all know that.

      He is right that I wouldn't go into a Muslim country, stand on a street corner and preach atheism, but I don't do that here either. As far as I'm concerned, everybody can believe in any god they choose as long as they leave me alone.

  Well, there goes what little respect I had for Comfort. In the Nightline debate, he seemed quite mild-tempered, level-headed, and kind. Then he goes and does the schoolyard 'nyah, nyah, you're a chicken!' thing.

  What's next?

  Dawkins: "Evolution is a well-supported biological fact."

  Comfort: "Is NOT!"

  There are many religions out there, probably as many as there are people. They are conveniently (self-) classified into denominations, sects, etc. based on a few key beliefs or attitudes. The cheeses in these groups would have us believe that everyone in them believes exactly the same; but tain't necessarily so.

  Personally, I'm not even sure that I believe in the existence of atheism. Certainly, there are people who call themselves atheists. Some of these guys have very negative feelings toward the concepts of God held by various religious groups. Or they have bad feelings about the history of certain groups, such that they can't/won't believe anything espoused by those groups. To me, none of this an atheist makes.

  I'm turned off by the arrogance perpetuated by those in religion and/or atheism. My idea of religion is that we should all get along. I've never once understood or agreed w/anyone who believes that murder was perpetuated or okayed by God or Allah. Or to use God or Allah to perpetuate hate. People like this are insulting religion and use it to justify their own insanity and stupidity. If you're confident enough to believe in your religion then what other say shouldn't be offensive. To kill someone because someone thinks that you've offended Muhammad is really off the chain.
