Catholic Bishops Say Voters' Souls at Stake »
Posted by: SonOfTheMask 9 months, 2 weeks agoVoters are implored not to support abortion-rights political candidates but also advised that views on abortion should not be the sole factor. Catholics should also weigh church teaching on such moral issues as immigration, just war and poverty, bishops said.

Free speech? Or pushing the envelope of separation of church and state?

Then how do you explain the church supporting George W. Bush? He has killed thousands. Mostly innocent. And I know in the past you have said that war is different. But I read in the bible that all sin is sin. No one sin is greater than any other. Isn't therefore killing just killing? Regardless of why you do it?
Killing children is wrong. We killed children. We are wrong.

What's the difference? "Don't support candidates A-X." That's the same thing as saying "vote for candidate Y or Z." One church cannot pose its theology on the entire population. It's wrong. Assuming there is a god, for a moment. He states that we have free agency: the right to make our own decisions, good or bad. If we're forced to choose a leader that'll make us behave one-hundred percent of the time, our choices go out the window and so does our ability to learn, grow, and become better people. One other thing: How is it that God could give a damn about immigration? I don't remember reading in the Bible, "thou shalt not allow people of other races to enter into thine country. Whosoever doest this, thine soul will be cast into the eternal hellfire that is called hell!"

Come on! This is only the church trying to push its own political agenda. Anyone should be able to see this. This has nothing to do with personal salvation. Who would really want to believe in such a cruel god: a god that can punish you for electing the wrong president. Give me a break!

(This is not meant either seriously or literally.) America is doomed. Our political system is firmly ruled by two and only two political parties. Satan's party #1 wants to kill babies and Satan's party #2 wants to kill poor people, and anybody who has any oil left on their land. God will judge us all....

DavidHalko, You're right...I was probably looking at it the wrong way; however, what if both candidates were pro-abortion? I am pro-life, but still, I would vote for the candidate I thought would be best for our country, regardless of his/her views on abortion. I still think the RC church shouldn't tell their followers harsh things like "Your souls are at stake"; I'm sure their real intent is to scare the Catholics and use their age-old guilt tactics. That would seem to remove freedom of thought.
While I do not think abortion should be legal, I think it's always going to be, whether we like it or not. And I DON'T like it. But we pro-lifers are pretty much outnumbered.

We read in history how churchs screw up nations and sometimes continents when they try to infringe their doctrins in political decision making. That's why America is so screwd up because you have these holier than thou, think they know it all fanatics running the country.

OK, so the Catholic Church wants to be a PAC. Fine. Revoke their tax exempt status and treat them like any other big business.
Hehehe. The very thought would scare them half out of their choirboys.

I'm glad I'm an atheist so that I can make up my own mind on things and not have to listen to what a bunch of stuffy old men in funny hats say about my soul.

There is very little here beyond what the Church teaches about life in general: follow your conscience as developed and guided by the Church. The document plainly states that abortion is not the only consideration. This is pretty much how all Christian churches behave. That is why voting is a matter of conscience-there is seldom a black or white choice. The anti-abortion candidate who favors an immoral war or the pro-choice candidate who opposes an immoral war? It must also be taken into account that no single office holder makes national policy.
