In high school there was this Wiccan girl who was suspended for 2 weeks because she would say under the gods instead of under god.

"We didn't think it was fair for the whole school to have to listen to it. It's almost religious oppression," she said"...... Good grief, no way. It is a huge part of our history,They can just not participate and show a bit of respect.

Huge part of our history?

Riddle me this, Debbie: when was "under God" added to the Pledge, and why?

Answers: When? 1954. It was written in 1892, and adopted as the official National pledge in 1945. Before WWII it was customary to salute with a stiff-armed, palm down manner much like the 3rd Reich used... it was quickly dropped when the war started.

Why? It was the Cold War. Had to keep the scary Communists at bay. The National Pledge had become a public prayer, and *surely* all those people invoking "God" every day would find favor (yeah, right. Whatever.)

I have mixed emotions about this one. I think the "Under God" part MUST be dropped, but I think having the pledge is a good thing. If I recall correctly, we took the pledge when we were in elementary school. I'm proud of these kids. They changed the pledge to be inclusive. Good for them!

I would suggest that the students that don't want to say the pledge of allegiance move to Berkeley, California. They would fit in extremely well there.
