After centuries of strife, the West has learned to separate religion and politics - to establish the legitimacy of its leaders without referring to divine command. There is little reason to expect that the rest of the world - the Islamic world in particular - will follow.

FTA: "Though we have our own fundamentalists, we find it incomprehensible that theological ideas still stir up messianic passions, leaving societies in ruin."

Has Mr. Lilla failed to notice 21st century America's messianic leader, the Destroyer of Nations?

Well religions are the source of more wars throughout history than almost anything. When people start believing the dogma, that is when the trouble starts. The West has replaced the supremacy of religious dogma with a different principle, namely, freedom. The idea of freedom is that it applies to everyone regardless of religion. One can believe whatever he/she wants to believe and as long as it does not infringe on others it is OK. (to be continued)

Thus, atheist as well as theist can exist alongside each other without going to war in the West, but not all see freedom that way. Some religions don't and some atheist don't and that is where some problems still exist even in the US. In the Muslim Middle East it is a world problem. That is why the war in Iraq is so important.h We need to get the idea of true freedom of thought and belief ingrained in the Middle East. There is really no alternative because the world is so intertwined today. To not accomplish this most important principle is to ultimately doom a lot of people in both the Muslim word as well as ours to doom.

Actually some might want to take me to task for saying religion is the source of most wars. It is really so-called leaders or religious charlatans who take advantage of the ignorant masses using bogus religion. From my point of view, religion is nothing more than a con of the masses by individuals who want power. Religion has always been used as a source for an easy ride by the charlatans or witch doctors going back to the beginning of time and as the religion gets established some of the charlatans actually start believing the dogma themselves.
