I think there is a fine distinction to be made here. Atheism and religion are not opposites. There are many, like myself, who are willing to agree that there is a power far greater than humankind. But I refuse to join any religion. To me, organized religion of any kind seeks to institutionalize that which is the most sacred. The power that makes the earth turn, flowers blossom, and the earth to smell sweet after a rain is not a power that can be put in a box and handed out like pap on a Sunday morning. It is a power that is to be revered and honored.
Atheists claim there is nothing. No power, no wonder, no magic to life.
To me, both sides are wrong. And I shall honor that power greater than myself in my own way. While I am picking the peaches, feeding the chickens or weeding the garden. You cannot prove a non-existence nor can you prove an article of faith.

I do hope that the atheists can help bring a balance to the public forum. It is long past time for the Bible pounders to get back in their box. They have to realize that their belief is just that, a belief. And they have no right to shove it down anyone else's throat. They should make sure that they are following the tenets of their own religion before castigating others or trying to pass legislation that infringes on others that do not believe as they do.
If they will spend time following their own holy book, they should be too busy to be meddling in anyone else's lifestyle choices. Let them make sure they clean their closets of all clothing that is made of more than one fabric for instance.
When they have sincerely and completely followed all the instructions of their very own bible, they will realize that their christ would not have had them behaving in such a hateful manner to those who do not see the world their way.

this is a hard subject for me,i was raised and am lutheran,i believe in the apostles creed and all it implies but organized religion is a dangerous thing because sinful peops r in there corrupting it
the neo cons in my opionion have set true Christian beliefs back a few hundred yrs
ex: i dont think u can be Christian and happily go to war,esp against a country that did nothing to u
u cant be Christian and watch the peops of NO beg for a week on tv and do nothing (as bush did)
there r many examples but i guess the regs get my drift
dont confuse faith/love of the Tiune God with organized religion becase whr the first is perfect the second is of man and like everything else of man has some good/some bad

I believe there is a God. My relationship to him is a personal one. I can't and won't try to force other's to respect or obey my interpreted laws of my God. I think that is the main difference between religious zealotry and just simply being religious. The attempt at forcing one's beliefs or religious ideas has been the catalyst for many wars. Wars are immoral. So I refrain from this dangerous behavior.
