Then the Pope should stay out of such issues as the family since they have no experience in it.

Great idea. Otherwise this reaffirmation of the celibacy policy is a bad deal for the altar boys.

Why should I take advice on sex and marriage from someone who's had neither? That would be like asking a chef if I need to get my car repaired.

The celebacy rule is historically recent in the Catholic Church.
The rule came out of the fact that being a bishop, cardinal, and eventually pop were all inherited posts, and with this class randier than a field full of rabbits, the royalty didn't want to have a bastard child claiming a seat at the throne.
Benny needs to get his head out of the First Century and begin reforms, else a schism will come and he'll be rendered virtually impotent -- it's the reason why here's acting like a dictator in reining in "wayward" (read independent, freethinking) parishes.

That is a great point cantfoolme, when is the article going to come on how he is going to deal with the paedophile abuse that is in the catholic church. How are the victums going to be reconcolidated, like in California by the church trying to file bankruptcy? What about the criminals that committed these crimes? Are they to be excomminitcated by the church and sentenced before court or just moved out and replaced in another church. Like I said still waiting for that article. I think these are more important issues as if the Priest can get married or women can become priest dont you?

Okay I'm going to have to jump in here and give you my point of view. There are quite a few arguments being thrown around, and I'll try to address quite a few of them.
1. Pedophilia - This is not caused by celibacy. As if abstaining from sex is going to somehow cause someone to want to molest children? The demographic, at least in the US, who is most likely to molest is a married male. Yet we wouldn't say that marriage causes child molestation would be. There is, in fact, not even the slightest amount of CORRELATIVE data which would cause someone to think that celibacy in the priesthood leads to molestation, let alone hard data. The fact is that besides being celibate, priests are statistically just as likely to participate in the egregious crime of molesting children as the average male.

The events that happened in the United States fall directly on the shoulders of the US Bishops. While the pope is the head of the church in matters of faith and morals, he doesn't hold dictatorial power over other bishops. Catholics believe, after all, that he is the first bishop among bishops. Besides for presiding in a special meeting with the US Bishops, accepting the resignation of a few central key figures, and continually calling for the holiness of priests and clergy, there's not much that he can really do. I do, however, see his reinforcing and restating the churches teaching on priestly celibacy as part of his role as "doing something." This world sees celibacy as madness, and thinks that it is in some way linked to the issue of what many of the bishops and a few priests in the US did. "If only they could marry, then this wouldn't happen" I've heard people say. The pope, reaffirming the church's teaching that celibacy is a gift does do something.

Ceilbacy is not a gift and is not even biblical if being forced upon someone. But alot of the Catholic doctrine is not biblical. The Pope can dictate to the entire Catholic word but has nothing to say when it come to pedophilia crimes? Wnem is going to spiritually speak out about the crimes committed by memembers of his flock.

Celibacy is abnormal...but then I think the entire Catholic church is a wacko organization. And this pope has to be one of the WORST...
