Baptist minister sorry about "Destroy the Jewish Race" ad

Religion – The minister of a Baptist church in South Portland asked for forgiveness Monday for frightening members of the Jewish community with a provocative newspaper advertisement that promoted his Sunday sermon about anti-Semitism. The minister made a mistake in judgement by entitling his sermon this, and another by advertising it in the newspaper. The title of the sermon was used for pure shock value; a simple advertising ploy to try to bring people to his church.

From the article: "The sermon was supportive of Jews but the words in the ad generated fear and anger, as well as complaints to the church and the newspaper.

"I've reviewed the sermon," said Emily Sandberg, executive director of the Jewish Community Alliance of Southern Maine. "When you read it, it is absolutely pro-Israel and pro-Jewish. It's the title that is absolutely inappropriate.""

Shock value. Not preaching anti-Semitism.

Now, if you want to get on your soap box and scream about how Swaggart and Robertson should step down for THEIR comments against various and sundry groups and individuals, I'll agree with you.

I told you before I'm only here to annoy you.

Is it working, yet?

Throw him out!!!

Shock value for "good purposes" cannot be tolerated!! It has already been used in Tsarist Russia, Nazi Germany, hateful Russia, USSR,now Russia-again, Argentina, etc., etc.

Swaggart & Robertson SHOULD step down--and return all the millions of dollars that they have bilked out of so many well-meaning people.

What a bunch of crock!! AND CRROKS!!!!

..and if he won't go?, then it's up to the congregation to oust him. ..and if they don't? Let him continue. It's a free country. Preacher did what Hollywood has been doing for a long time. The guy did apologize, but as a parishioner, congregant, etc...I would question his methods.

The sad part about all of this is that many fail to realize that Jesus and all of the Apostles weren't Baptist, weren't Methodists, weren't Catholics....weren't any protestant religion. They were all Jews, kind sweet ones at that. It simply shows God has a sense of humor after all is said and done. He's much smarter than any of us, of that I'm certain.

"He's much smarter than any of us, of that I'm certain."

I hear God has an IQ of 250

I think that would be a very low estimate.

When you look up at night and see all the stars and the heavens, you are impressed, but when you fly over this earth at about 500 feet and look down, and see what we have done with his creation, my question is, "why hasn't he barfed on us?" He has to be disappointed with our failure to care for His creation.

Yes, but would someone with an IQ above 250 create fleas? Be honest!

Although maybe he was just practicing... hmmm.

God has perfect and absolute knowledge, the knowledge we have is just a fist full of pebbles.

LordyLordy,

You are absolutely right! They were all Jews. And ehat an example they gave all of us!!

And---I would guess---that they would NOT be impressed by the likes of Swaggert, Robertson, and the South Portland stupid-simpleton, and thousands more from his mold.

I think it is about time to celebrate life and forget the empty heads!!

Every one of these people are NOT God, they are human, just like you and I, capable of making mistakes and being forgiven for them.

If my girlfriend weren't willing to forgive me, I'd still be doing dishes and sleeping on the couch! Fortunately I'm not.

It is time to celebrate life. I'm quite sure if Jesus and the Apostles had squirt guns, they would have had water fights in those fields, maybe even put a frog in each other's sleeping bags, just for fun... I rather doubt they were serious all the time, but their message of love cannot be mistaken.

P.S. to Hmac:

We MUST be very careful with so-called "shock value".

It is what got GW Bush in the White House!

And thousands dead in Iraq!!

And---WHAT more???

Shame on shock value and other irresponsible, self-serving PR techniques!!!

For some people, hatred of Bush is all that they've got. Pretty pathetic way to live.

No Starbright. What got G.W. in The White House is the fact that Senator Al Gore couldn't carry his home state of Tennessee. This was a MAJOR political blunder.

Tennessee knew Gore. He was a bore. So Gore no more.

As a Jew, and based solely on the article, this isn't something to get excited about. Guy made a mistake, he admitted it and apologized. Let it go.

The blacks should read what you just wrote and say the same thing about Joe Biden. He tried to compliment Barak Obama, only the words came out wrong. Because he's white and mispoke, he was labeled a racist.

Dear Cherev,

As a Jew and son and grandson of Holocaust survivors, for me anything like this is something to track very closely. The whole issue of genocide is, in my opinion, taken much too lightly these days.

Forgiveness without forgetfullness....

"Forgiveness without forgetfullness"

Do you apply that same standard to Jimmy Carter and Hillary Clinton?

Don't destroy the Jews. They're doing such good things to the Palestinians and spreading the love of Judaism throughout the Middle East.

Try to tell me that I don't have a right to exist. Try to kill my family and those I love with cowardly terrorist tactics. Publicly vow to drown all my neighbors and push us to the sea. Watch my wrath.

"They're doing such good things to the Palestinians and spreading the love of Judaism throughout the Middle East."

They treating the so-called "Palestinians" better than they deserve. Judaism was hated long before the State of Israel.

Your facetiousness is noted. Next time you whine that you don't want to exterminate the Jews, I'll recall this.

You are a not fit to be a Religous leader. There is no sorry here, because this is something inbred in you. Step down and ask for forgiveness and enlightenment for your evil tongue

No. This is not Afganistan. The congregation determines whether he is fit to continue. We have the freedom to go to another service.

If this person is a true minister of God, It should be God that has the last word of wether he remains or not. However, He did do the right thing by apologizing. A true Christian should love the Jewish people.

avatar

when they/them speaks it is the Holy Ghost speaks, so why blame them/him, yeah, true Christians should love the Jewish people for crucifying Jesus and proved to the world that he was a false prophet, can you tell me a Jew who believe in Jesus the son of God, and who died for the sins of mankind, please don't get emotional answer me.

The Messianics are not Jews. They are not accepted by any legitimate Jewish group.

avatar
Reply

Sorry, they are not Jews. The faith that they believe in has nothing whatsoever to do with authentic Judaism and, in fact, is totally against what Judaism teaches. Hence, they are not Jews.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 4 Surah Nisaa verses 157-158: 157 That they (the Jews) said (in boast) "We killed Christ Jesus, the son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah"; but they killed him not nor crucified him but so it was made to appear to them; and those who differ therein are full of doubts with no (certain) knowledge but only conjecture to follow; for of a surety they killed him not.

how can you doubt ALLAH

Another title would not have gotten the same attention and the sermon would not have been heard by so many. It may have been distateful and provocative in order to get attention, but the message was the exact opposite of the title.

When did freedom of speech become subject to being politically correct or inoffensive? The minister may have used a poor choice for the title, but it was not anything for him to be forced out for, since the sermon was the opposite and supported Jews. Get down off your self-righteous high horses, people can see you aren't wearing underwear.

Jewish isn't a race, it's a religion.

If it were a race, the promised land would be located somewhere between Romania and Baghdad, via the land route along the Black Sea.

Or that's what genetic studies of mitochondrial DNA, only passed along by mothers, indicates.

So the "promised land" is really Georgia. At least to anyone ashkenazi.

Since when was that, in that case how come they became the chosen people of God, somebody told me it was Alaska, not Georgia, anyway earth belongs to God people can live anywhere they want but there must be a proper immigration procedure, you can't sort of go into Georgia with guns and tanks to chase everybody and build settlements there.
